Men's Hair Loss: Causes and Treatments

Hair loss is common, with close to 50% of men and women affected by pattern hair loss by age 50.

At Davis Hair Restoration, we're using advanced hair-transplant systems to offer natural-looking results through minimally invasive approaches.
The diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia in men is generally straightforward. It is made by observing a "patterned" distribution of hair loss and confirmed by observing the presence of miniaturized hair in the areas of thinning.

The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, also referred to as "male pattern" or "common" baldness.

It's caused by the effects of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on hair follicles. The effect is that the growth phase of the follicle lifecycle becomes shortened, and the resting phase becomes longer. The follicles shrink so that the hair becomes thinner and eventually unable to grow at all. This is known as follicular miniaturization. With prolonged exposure to DHT, the genetically susceptible follicles eventually disappear leaving a bald scalp.

Men’s hair loss can be effectively treated in two primary ways: non-surigal medical treatments and surgical hair restoration.

Medical treatments include prescription medications, laser-light therapy and supplements. Our board-certified hair transplant specialists also offer the latest advances in Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and NeoGraft.

Davis Hair Restoration provides a state-of-the-art hair restoration treatments utilizing the latest technological advances for patients. If you have concerns about your hair loss, it is always best to be examined by a board certified hair loss specialist. You can set up an in-person physician consultation. If you cannot visit one of our New Jersey locations for an in-person consult, you can request a virtual consult.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Am I a candidate for a hair transplant?

The best way to determine if you're a candidate for hair restoration is to schedule a consultation with our team at Princeton Hair Restoration. With the revolutionary NeoGraft hair transplant system, there are now many more patients who are now candidates for effective treatment. The quality and density of your donor hair sites will help your specialist determine the likely outcomes of a hair transplant. Important medical considerations before considering transplant include appropriate management of any underlying conditions including hypertension and diabetes. Your hair transplant surgeon will also want to know if you are on any blood thinners or anti-platelet agents due to cardiac conditions.

How is the procedure done?

The hair selected for use as donor grafts will generally be harvested from the back and sides of the head. After careful preparation for sterility and comfort, the minimally-invasive NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction system works by automated removal of individual hair follicles. The collected hairs are carefully studied for viability and characteristics. Next, the grafted follicles are re-implanted at the recipient site with meticulous attention to angle, orientation and direction to help restore a natural look to the hairline. This is the most critical step for both success and satisfaction.

Is the hair transplant a permanent solution?

Donor site hair is carefully selected for their resistance to balding. After an initial shedding phase, the transplanted hair will continue to grow in its new position for as long as any healthy hair follicle. As such, your investment is secure in a near permanent solution.

Will I need additional hair transplants in the future?

This is harder to predict without a direct consultation, however it is not uncommon to stage procedures. Generally, this is done no earlier than 9-12 months to allow adequate time for the initial transplant to mature. A second or possibly even third transplant is intended for additional areas. Don't worry though! The cost is unaffected by the number of transplants you receive, but rather based on the number of grafts you require. We recommend that your strategy is customized to your very individual hair quality.

Cost of hair transplant

When deciding whether to undergo hair transplant surgery, the cost is understandably a major determinant. As with any surgical procedure, the cost of a hair transplant will vary depending on a number of factors, including the number of grafts required, length of the process, and whether the patient decides to undergo any additional treatments as part of maintenance. Although the price is undeniably an important factor when searching for a solution to hair loss, it is essential to take your time to select a highly qualified expert that meets your expectations. And while there may be an urge to find the lowest price, unfortunately there is also a large variability on results related to technique, equipment, and experience. Your free, private consultation with us is a perfect opportunity for you to learn more about Davis Hair Restoration and our commitment to the highest standards. We will take the time to learn about your goals, answer any questions you may have, and make pricing transparent. However, hair transplant is still a surgical procedure and as a result, it is associated with a higher price point than other, temporary hair loss options. During consultation, patients are encouraged to explore all hair loss options such as propecia, laser hair caps and specialized shampoos/vitamins. While these are excellent options to slow down hair loss, they cannot provide the same lasting results as hair transplant.
